OK Guys, I am sorry but I have found this information before, but cant locate it now.

My Titan Headgasket covers a large portion of my water passages on one side, it has two holes cut into it just like the other side, but there should only be one hole and it shouldn't be covered up.; I have heard this was ok, but am unsure

I have the titan (actually the are said to be rebadged cometic hg's) and do not have any problem with the hg.

Be sure to drill out the front rivet on the "passenger side" of the block because the rivet can get between the block and the cilinder head. Newer style titan hg's don't have the problem but if you are unsure of the one you have please drill it out and you will not have any problems.

Ahh thank you, that was the reassurance I needed. I remember to remove the rivet, and all appears to be well, the head sits flush with no problems(and yes I had the front plate machined with the block) both the head and the block are lower than 23 RA, I tried to make everything in spec, and I am hoping for the best :aigo::evil2:

Everything below 28RA is perfect for the titan / cometic.
I recall people saying that even with a "bad" RA in the 50's you should be good.

I love this HG and have much confidence that it will hold all the hp I can throw at it. :)
Good luck with your rebuild.

I also have the titan head gasket. It has been running strong for a year and a half now. just tuned the safc for 18psi and it handled geat!

so are you still living in riverside? We should take are car's through the Ortega canyon's some time, they just put in all new roads and it is bad ass! Good luck with eveything and let me know how it goes.

Sweet! and yeah I go to school here so it sounds pretty sweet, I'm not that familiar with those canyons and it would be pretty sweet to check em out... LOL might be a lil hard for me to keep up because at this point I am bone stock except for the rebuild/headgasket

Here's a photo of an OEM Toyota HG and the Titan/Cometic. The water jacket holes are identical (as are all the other holes, for that matter). From left to right - Rock Auto, Stone, unknown, EOM Toyota, Titan/Cometic.

And a photo of the offending rivet that must be ground off. I obviously was not aware of this info when I installed it 6 years ago. You can see where part of the rivet was crushed, and the indentation left in the head surface.

I'm getting HKS Stopper type MHG's next. I can post comparison photos of the head gaskets, as I will have everything that I'm aware of except Greddy when the HKS arrive later this week.

We are replacing my freinds BHG as he has a Titan that still has the rivet, and he's leaking everywhere as a result. We did his around the same time I did mine, over 5 years ago. There wasn't as much info available back then, and we weren't thinking we would have to read some obscure post on some supra-specific forum for proper installation techniques for a $100+ MHG.

What were we thinking? Oh yeah, I remember. We paid Titan/Cometic for a gasket that fits our cars. The one's they sell don't fit unless 'modified'. Unacceptable, IMHO.

That's why we won't use them again. Any company that can't get something that simple to work properly shouldn't be supported by consumers until they fix the issue.

HKS. Get the good stuff. They are the best, hands down. Sh*tcan the rest. Or buy the others and store them for photos and posterity as I have done.

i didn't know about the rivet in the titan and just slammed it on.
have driven the car fast and hard and no problems until now. seems i have the newer type that just fits. :)

If your block hasn't had much off the deck you can get away with it as there's a slight recess where the rivet is.

It's not "said" to be the same as a Cometic it IS a Cometic ;)

Here's a photo of the "new" Titan/Cometic that just blew on my third engine. Wasn't the gaskets fault, though. Poor build with a junk resurface on block and deck combined with a poor tune resulted in instant detonation, stuck rings, and popped MHG. The MHG actually saved the rest of the engine by letting go early.

It looks like Cometic has moved the rivet out slightly, but it can still interfere in some instances.

The Titan was my first MHG, too. And even though I crushed the rivet, it never failed. But I didn't deck the block, and like IJ said, there was just enough room to make it work. My buddy did deck his block and head, and probably didn't overtorque as I did, therefore his leaks.

Yeah the titan Head gasket I have had the slightly extended rivet, but I removed it just to appease my mind anyway... :icon_bigg I torqued it to the specifications on the paper included with the box, and I used their moly lube. They suggested 80ft lbs when using the ARP moly lube, should I have over torqued or is this fine?

you should retorque after about 6 heat cycles

hmm why the retorque? I have heard mixed things about that... I think I know the reasoning behind it, but I have been told yes and no on re torquing

every time the car heats up and cools down... it stretches the bolts (or studs). therefore they lose their torque. ive heard of people who have removed a head and found that the bolts were loose.
i would either put everything back together and wait 6 heat cycles and then do a retorque
or there is a process you can do when you first install the new bolts that will stretch them (so you dont have to do a retorque). i dont remember the procedure but im sure if you do a search you can find what your looking for

Just pulled down a 7m that was useing ARP head studs and it was still torqued to original tension after 1 year of running hard. Not saying this is the way to go just the results I've personally had. If i was using stock bolts I'd re torque for sure.

yeah thats more along the lines I've heard, that ARP's do not recommend a retorque, but the stockers are a hell yes... like you said though it is all heresay haha but what isnt?
