So I'm attempting(with the help of some SM members) to replace the input shaft bearing along with the needle roller bearing on my w58.

I have the front extension housing off and I'm trying to get the input shaft out with the least amount of disassembly. (makes for a better chance of getting it back together ;))

Does anyone know how to remove just the input shaft? The TSRM lists the process for taking the ENTIRE tranny apart, but I really only want the input shaft. The first counter gear below the input shaft seems to be the culprit holding in the input shaft, as well as the shifter linkage.

Any tips as I start taking the shifter rod out?

Any easy way to go about this?

Anyone had experience with it?

Thanks a million. You guys rock !!!

Pics coming soon.

Factory service manual (TRSM) goes into great detail on tranny disassembly. You MUST have one available (hardcopy/electronic) if you want to do it right. Or, at the very least have someone around who has alot of experience.

Hopefully someone else posts a link to the online TRSM, or you can search for it...

I am personally intimidated at the trannies' "apparent" complexity, so I'd only mess with it if I really had to. Good luck!

Oh well.

I'm too hesitant to rip into the tranny so I'm taking it into a shop. Being that the tranny is off the car and mostly exposed, labor "shouldn't" kill me.

If anyone does know how one would go about replacing the input shaft needle roller bearing without a total tranny disassembly I'd still be interested in knowing. :)
