Supra is going to the mechanic

Well, my dream is finally coming true. The Supra is going to the mechanic. I have a couple questions to ask before the car goes under the knife.

When my car is under boost and I park it to shut off, I get smoke or steam shooting our from the turbo side. It looks like it may be coming from the manifold or something. From what I can remember, it doesnt smell and its not coloured. Picture a kettle that has boiling water in it. It steams out the kettle hole just like that in my Supra.

The car has sat for around 6 months without movement. Here is a list of what is being fixed and what parts I am having the mechanic install.

Replace CT-26 with Rebuilt one.
Fix the Power Steering leak
Add new Amsoil Motor Oil and Gear/Diff Oil
Autolite 3923 Spark Plugs (.32 gap)
NGK Spark Plug Wires
Replace Timing belt and Tensioner
Fill up with fresh 94 octane


I bought a brand new Optima Red Top battery a little while ago and I cant seem to start the car with it. It always has to be jump started. Is my alternator bad?

What else can you recommend to me that I should do for regular maintenance?

Many people have had problems with the Red Tops. It seemed like it never wanted to hold a charge for long. I switched to a cheap battery and it would hold a charge for 3 weeks w/o starting it. Red Top was dead in 3 days...

That would be worst case scenario. I like my power steering. I'll see if the mechanic can just patch it up or something. If it cant be done then I will have him remove it.

One thing after the other....

that's what i did.
the hard line that goes from the resevoir to the rack/pinion had a leak. and instead of replacing it i just decided to live without PS. it sucks parallel parking but who cares. it gives my arms/shoulders a good workout. :biglaugh:

after driving my uncles Continental that had no PS, i think i can drive anything w/o PS... :biglaugh:
oh and as speeds increase its not bad at all. anything under 5 ish is but you can get a good workout :D

driving without p/s is fine.. ive been doing it for over a year of daily driving. and im by no means a big guy. if you just cut the belt and call it a day, its going to be hard. but if you drain the rack and cross the line its honestly not that bad at all.

A friend of mine had a severe power steering leak. He just filled it up with diff fluid to slow the leak. It worked pretty well. That could get you by until you can afford to have it fixed or until its warm enough to fix it your self. Either way good luck.

Could you possibly expand on this method so that if I need to remove PS, I could tell my mechanic which way to do it.

I fixed a power streering leak :D. The lines crossing the front of the car burst one day because they were rusted out and my whole driveway filled with PS fluid. It was a bitch to fix, I had to pull out my compressor and use my air hammer to break it off. I was lucky though in that the lines were in plain sight under the car and I could replace them.

I did find that power steering is a nice thing to have, but I wouldn't have sold the car if I didn't have it.
