About 3-4 gallons, of which only 1-2 will be available, because your pump won't suck it all out.

Also, NEVER let your tank get below 1/4, because your pump will try to suck up some of the crap floating around in there.

And, the gasoline cools the electric pump, so if the pump is exposed to air for long periods, it will burn out.

and make sure to refill with real gasoline! just messing. but nickleye called it, ive had too many friends that burned out fuel pumps because they sucked crap into it. then, when they replaced the fuel pump, the sending unit failed for some reason related to either sucking the crap into it or overheating caused by lack of gas.

just cars in general. most of the guys around here own domestics, but i've heard it happening in both imports and domestics. one guy went through maybe three fuel pumps before he just had to replace the entire system, lines and all. he just did a halfway job each time, so you figure if he did three halfway jobs that equals 150% on a 300% job. not cool, and his project costs probably went up by around 300% too. thats just retarded.

My goodness..... ;)

Think about it for a minute guys ..

The pump sucks from the bottom of the tank anyway and has a screen.

This goes back to the dark old days before Galvanised tanks were common (40+ years ago) if you let the fuel level drop you'd get condensation and rust forming on the roof of the tank which would then drop in and cause issues.

Agreed that the fuel keeps the pump cool but when there's no fuel the motor stops and the relay shuts off in our cars so more misinformation.

i had driven my supra for 11 yrs, i could drive that thing almost a quarter inch under E ... the light could be on for 50+ miles no problems

then i swapped in my new gauge cluster recently and it barely makes it to E before empty LOL (i learned the hard way)

so it all depends... just learn your car i guess?

I never let my gas get below half a tank just because I don't want the pump to suck up the sludge.
ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Why do I bother.......

THE PUMP SUCKS FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE TANK

why is this fucking concept so hard to grasp?

if you think there is sludge then empty your tank and clean it. the car has a fuel filter before the pump. that little sock you put on your fuel pump so the chances of "sucking up" something is like me winning the lottery. also how many of you realize that toyota desinged the fuel system in such a way that the fuel filter only needs to be changed every 15 years or million miles. I'm sure they were not worried about sucking up junk into the fuel pump.

Ok...here's what REALLY happens.

As I stated above, try not to run often below 1/4 tank,,,because..1)..the fuel keeps the electric pump cool.

We (at the shop) replace a dozen pumps per year (mostly Chevy) and many are due to the customer running it at about a 1/4 tank or less.

Also..2) EVERY fuel tank has 'some' crap in it, even at the gas station. That is why you should NOT get gas at a station that just received its load. The new load stirs up the crap that was on the bottom, so you may get some in your tank.

Also...yes, the pump picks up from the bottom. So...if you run around close to empty all the time, you are more likely to pick up the more CONCENTRATED crap in the tank.

The more gas you keep in the tank, the more diluted the fuel /crap mixture is, so the chances of sucking crap ONTO the strainer (pre-filter) and plugging it up are much less. As you drive and turn and hit bumps, the crap stays mixed thru-out the tank.

Think...one spoon full of Ovaltine 'lightly strirred' in a glass 1/4 full of milk with a straw. Now think full glass of milk, one spoon full, straw. get the picture.

And...I have seen fuel pump strainers that have gotten holes in them, and some that have come off, and just bounce around inside the tank. We figured this is what killed the pumps.
