starter circut help.

okay, so everyone knows im right in the middle of my rebuild. im putting a 90 7mgte into a 87 gt body. im to the point of trying to get the motor to fire now. eitherway, my first attempt was a no go. i have everything else, ie: windshield wipers, lights all that junk. but turn the key and nothing from the motor. so i dove up under the car to start with the starter. there is a 2 wire connection that i cant find were it goes. i found the connector on the 90 body but i cant find it on the 87 body. can anyone with a pre89 body send me some pix of thier starter wiring circut? im pretty sure that one connector is the root of my problems. i even have fuel pump working. any help will get rep points and a big thank you.

There should only be two connections. The clip on the top of the starter and the positive battery cable.

i have the batt cable hooked up and the wire comes off the starter. there is just nothing around for the 2 wire connector to go to. the difference in years of cars is killin me.

As far as I know the pre-89 only have two connections going to the starter. At least that's how it is on mine.

What kind of plug is on the 2-wire connection?

^ Correct. One is the starter signal wire (causes most problems... "All I hear is clicking when I turn the key") and the other is the main power wire.

The two wire connection that you have found may either be the neutral safety swtich (I think) off the TOP of the trans (r154) or something else.

right. like i said, i have the batt cable hooked up and the wires that would be coming frome the starter solenoid. but, those wires come off the starter and dont connect to anything. thats what im trying to find. some pix from anyone would be awesome.

Also, I know on my car there is a two wire connector that goes to the pwr steering rack.

were both chassis' automatic? I have an 86.5 and an 89 both 5spds, and both of mine have had the wiring through the clutch interlock and starter bypassed, so Im afraid I cant help ya with pictures of the stock setup.

What the previous owners of both my cars did was run the wire off the starter directly into the "out" side of the plug that goes to the clutch switch. (something I would like to put back to factory some day)

to determine if you have a problem beyond the wiring connections you could "hotwire" the starter to a remote switch...would let ya get it started for testing purposes at least

when i did the motor swap, i left the engine harness connected to the motor. i know about the differences in a 90 7mgte engine harness and a pre 89 auto, non turbo, body harness. so, its the stock engine harness of a 90t and a stock body harness of a 87 na.

My bad, I got that much... but is a 5spd harness or auto, because the starter curcuit (at least) is different.

the new motor is a 5 speed and the original body is a auto.

Wire up a manual start switch.

I'm sorry but I still dont understand what the problem is. There should be a brown connector for the starter signal, a grey (iirc) one from the battery, and then a wire on the starter between the motor and solinoid.

For now, if you dont want to mess with it much, go with what JAV said and fix up a remote starter.

Lookin' at what MDC said it probably is nss, just loop in and try that.

Battery, to switch, to starter signal plug on starter (brown). Make sure you use the proper gauge wiring. Its 10ga iirc.

Well my pics wouldn't help you much so I'll use my awesome photochop skillz.
Simplest diagram I could make.

Wire the switch so it has a negative wire going to a ground, I have mine to the negative battery terminal.
Then hook the positive wire from the switch to the clip on the starter. Leave the positive and negative battery cables where they are normally hooked up.

Ninja edit: and hide the switch somewhere cool.

so your grounding out the signal side of the starter?
