hey every buddy last Saturday i sold my 91 NA auto with 194,000 miles for 3600. :icon_bigg
this week i am looking at a 89 turbo auto targa with 134,000 miles for 3500 (im gonna offer him less). :evil2:
its very clean inside and out.
but i cant find any service records on the car at toyota nor does he have any he bought it from a used car dealership.
my ? is can i pull the valve covers off and retorque the head?
will that be ok for now till i can save up and do a complete rebuild?
im not doing anything to the car for now just stock and driving it. well matneince of course is my first priority all new belts and check the timing belt if it can wait till spring to be replaced i will wait.
and i need someone to carfax the vin for me if anyone has access to it.
thanks
justin

With a car this old, service records aren't going to do a lot of good IMO. When I bought my '90, it had seemingly no problems, and almost immediately after buying it, I had to replace the starter and radiator.

Besides the obvious, things I would do if I was shopping for it -

-Drive the car at various rpms with the widows down (Rod knock)
-Rev it at idle to see if the motor shakes (motor mounts)
-Take it over some speed bumps, and listen for any weird noises

I think really the best you can do aside from taking it to a mechanic, is to look it over, and get the carfax... but you'll probably have to replace some stuff early.

That being sad, you're a lucky bastard to get 3600 for an NA Auto :naughty:

and yes i am a lucky bastard getting 3600 it was my neighbors first car Ive known him since he was in diapers but it sucks cause i see it every time i leave the house so i just wanna cry sometimes that was my first love. but im geting a turbo one :evil2:

ask you dad lol
Some people Have Gotten away with just retorquing the head. If you are totally sure the hg isnt blown maybe try it? or replace the bolts with some arp studs? u can re-use them when u go for rebuild.

Dude, I got my Turbo in August and am STILL gonna do the HG to a metal one and studs, probably this month. I'm not taking any chances, especially when I had overheating AFTER replacing the rad hoses and flushing/filling the coolant (still think it was a stuck thermo tho...).

Belts should be next, especially the Timing belt. Get a kevlar one that'll outlast that engine too. Timing pulley, water pump, A/C pulley (everything will be off the front, why not?)...

no its Grey and i ended up picking it up for 2200 today.
only shit part is out of me and another supra nut and my dad (master tech) we dident notice that the timing light dident come on with the key turned on before u start.
the asshole took it out.
drove it checked the timing and it was at 18!
turned it down to 10 ran like piss no power what so ever very slugish.
put a new light in the check engine light spot and i am getting two codes 51 and 52 i think i am getting 51 cause the AC button was in the on position.
but 52 i am scared cause it says knock sensors maybe bad what do you guys think?
the car only has 134,000 miles on it.
is there anything to check before going out and buying new ones.
sorry if that is not understandable
thanks
justin

52 is your knock sensor code. but it may not mean you have bad knocksensors.. imo i think Most likely the cause of your code 52 is bad wiring. Many people have had that problem and many people had fixed it by re-wiring them (the 2 knock sensors).

I myself had that same problem and i fixed it by re-wiring them. i bought a kit off shaeff (he makes a really good re-wire kit) so that you dont have to do it yourself. it took me 15 mins.

with that code the ecu retards the timing so that you dont damage your engine that explains the no power feeling.

and it looks like the previous owner avoided the problem by advancing the timing to compensate for the ecu's retarding... very stupid... and hid it from you by removing the cel...

they are both below the lower intake mani. on the block. one is near the front of the block behind the alternator and the is about the same level height-wise right at the front of the starter (this one is a pain in the ass to remove/get to...) but if you are doing the re-wire first.. which is what i hope you are doing.. then you should be able to simply disconnect the old ones and plug in the new ones.. if you buy sheaff`s kit.. he provides good instructions... and we`re also here to help.

if you (for some reason) want to remove the KS or something... its a 27mm socket/wrench and the one near the back requires you to loosen the starter to get it off.. wat a pain in the ass! lol

you shouldnt have a hard time finding them at all with your dad to guide you. some people get them from underneath the car.. i just got to them from above... and stuck my skinny arm in there lol. the connector is a round green connector (just incase you pull something else out by accident lol)

lol np.
Btw if you do need to replace a sensor or both sensors... there's plenty of people here parting out their cars with perfectly good sensors.. I bought one off a member here for only $35 shipped lol. and it works perfectly fine.
