You know how everybody says, "well, it's a 20 year old car, it's gonna rattle and clunk etc...you just have to get use to it".

I cannot get use to it!

I have spent the last three years trying to get rid of every rattle, squeek, clunk, wind noise (not easy with a sunroof) and I think I'm just about there. The reason I say "I think I've got 'em all" is because I hear very road noise now that my ear is "fine tuned" and automatically attribute any noise to my car.
The last noise I fixed was a clunky rear upper shock mount. And I still hear an occasional squeek or rattle (I think)....probably one of those panels in the cargo or...hmmmmm???

Have any of you tried to get rid of every unwanted noise emitted from your ride? Successfully?

What was the most baffling noise to isolate?

I'd really like to know that I'm not the only one.

My hatch squeaks a little. But when the top is off it squeaks like crazy. I'll get around to replacing the weatherstripping and the rubber whatever-they-ares back there at some point in the near future.

Yeah, I like the ''silence'' too, though I have the clunky-thing in the left rear shock tower (prolly the same thing as you have?). Still, as I put the interior back in, I guess I just can't hear it anymore (prolly music too, and it wasn't really loud anyways).
Still the squeaks and rattles are defo nono :D

Oh and after reading dcrsupras post, it came to my mind, that without the roof the front bolt rattles like hell almost in front of my face :D. Still I musn't forget it's the previous owners ''custom'' bolt...WTF????

Something on the right side of my car makes a very loud rattling noise if I hit a bump in the road. Sounds metal on metal. I can't figure out what the hell it is.

Wow, you sir, are dedicated ;)

Thanks.

It's become kind of an obsession, but when I finally fixed most of the noises it was so satisfying to go over a bumpy road and not hear any noises.

People who ride in my car get sick of me saying "did you hear that"?
Or asking them if they can hear where the rattle is coming from in an effort to isolate some noise.

I even had my girlfriend drive the car (yikes!) while I rode in the back trying to find where "noises" were coming from.

a lot of time there is felt strips between the panels, over time and wear they desintegrate, replace em and it helps a lot...

also look for any missing or loose screws

TIGHTEN YOUR SUBFRAME BOLTS! It's my personal crusade to get everyone to do this, as it's cleared up 99% of the issues I've had with vibration and noise. Most cars have never had them tightened...

Also a big source of noise can be the pads on either side of the side window glass. I replaced mine and this made a huge difference.
