rods vs. pistons

T-virus infected
oil starvation rods and bearings, detonating pistons.
If you keep an eye on ur motor and keep fluids topped off chances are new guys think hey Fuel cut defencer and or improperly tuning and mismatching mods they'll detonate a piston or two. usually the hg goes before that unless ya got a mhg.
If you mod it well and have a decent tune and u dont keep on eye on on fluids u'll spin a bearing and get rod knock.
It's really up to you which breaks first.
;) usually rods/bearings because most people dont keep up their motors(previous owners)

My origional motor I had rodknock and ended up spinning bearing #1 and breaking ringland's on the same piston.
2nd motor (rebuilt and installed) I had rodknock from the time I installed it (bought a "low kms" halfcut with r154)
I'd say if driven with raised boost, mhg, hiflo turbo, zorst, pod filter then rodknock will happen before loosing pistons.
Having said that all it takes is one good bang and youve lost a piston (look at Ians piston with a "speed"hole :icon_bigg in it)

rod knock is purely an oil delivery issue.

under ideal conditions, nothing will break. detonation kills the stock pistons. horsepower isn't going to fold a rod, over-reving will.

The reason for the question is that im planning on getting some stock pistons treated to hold high hp. I have aftermarket rods but still concidering what pistons I want to go with. Rather spen $200 on treating than $600 on pistons im not happy with. By the way, any suggestions. A former MK3 owner has suggested I use Arias..Im concidering since they have top fuel experience. But, on the other hand there's Wiesco who treats there pistons as well and are reasonably priced for the package. I don't mind paying extra for the higher quality.

heh. so you'll drop $500+ on aftermarket rods but not on pistons? :3d_frown:

from what i have read, stock rods + reconditioning and shot peening are good for 600+. our rods are really solid.

pistons not so much... its wise to get a forged set.

wow i havent posted on here in weeks :(

I say run the stock pistons, run the stock rods and see what happens. I've been doing this for 12 some years, and I've NEVER heard of ANYONE who's broken a piston or rod due to making too much power. it's always due to detonation or lack of oil.

The plan is to do so in the future, but until I make a final decision on an aftermarket set the plan is to run treated pistons. The plan is to build a frankenstein motor to see what componets will take what. Just a little R&D with blocks my mechaninc and I have laying around.
