Replacing head gasket?

So i have finally blown my head gasket in my supra and i just have a few questions. I would like to replace the bhg with a hks mhg but the trouble is we don't have a machine shop here i would trust to handle the job and don't have to money to have it sent out. So what other options do i have?

if u cant machine the head and the block the mhg wont seal right :/ so i guess ur only option is to replace with an oem one which isnt the same as the mhg :/ i suggest you keep looking or else you cant do much

Do you have any mods? How much boost are you running? The best advice has been given. I replaced mine with a stock hg sprayed it with copper, added ARP's and torqued it down to about 75lbs. I ran upgraded exhaust, intake and the boost was about 10psi on the stock CT.. I had no problems whatsoever on that setup for over a year.

mods are full three inch exhaust bic ddp atmosphere waste gate dump four puck clutch and lightweight flywheel running about ten pounds of boost on factory turbo and i need to figure this out soon car is my daily driver and school starts soon are stcok gaskets with arp studs a good option or should i trust my machine shop????

so i just got off the phone with the machine shop and he said that he could machine the head and more than likely get away without machining the block what do you think.

wow, no... first off you need both head and block, since the gasket seals on both ends of the engine, both surfaces need to be from what i was told a 25 RA "rough average" or better, which i was told is also smother than a mirror and a babys butt, which is pretty smooth in my opinion :p but call them back, ask them if they understand what Rough average is and ask if they can do a 25 or better job. then also be prepaired to order some ARP bolts for later, while the engine is getting machined they will most likely tell you to get new freeze plugs "i would recommend them to" order up a new gasket set to, so you can just have new gaskets for everything, unless you are just going to leave almost everything on there. my engine is so stripped down to almost nothing stock anymore i can just pull the head right off by disconnecting some wires and fuel lines and im done :)

This is why i don't trust this machine shop the guy is kind of....slow to say the least what about the stock gasket with some arp head studs?

I'm assuming you're taking it apart yourself (as in not paying, not necessarily alone) as driving somewhere to have someone pull it apart and do all the work would be very costly. You can either take it to a machine shop, whether it be one that you don't trust or find another one that is outside your area, but still relatively close, or put everything together without machining and baby the car going to school praying it doesn't blow before you save up enough money to do it right.

Another option is selling the car and getting a reliable one. Scary though, I know, but it depends on where your priorities are.

+1 for MHopemk3. I have the same thing on my n/a and ran for 3+ years. I ran the old turbo on stock hg with oem hg and arps and pulled 12 psi boost on stock engine and turbo ( damn wastegate ). It ran find when I pulled it.

Since i am low funded i think i will just try the oem head gasket and hope for the best and i start a savings account for the supra head gasket fund lol and thanks for the feed back about the oem gasket MHopemk3 and 87nasupra

Just my 2 cents... when I did the HG on my '87 a few years ago, I did not deck the block, only had the head milled. I re-installed it with an HKS stopper type 2mm gasket and ARP studs torqued to 80 ft. lbs. Ran 10 pounds of boost for 43k miles 'til I sold the car last year and never had the slightest hint of another BHG or any other problems for that matter. Just sayin' it can be done and made to work If you "half ass" it, but you have to make VERY SURE the block is as clean as it can be without gouging it with the scraper or other wise marring the block surface. Just make sure that the lower timing cover EXACTLY matches to the surface of the block if it has been removed.

Thanks for the input boostcraver but i think i will just go for an oem one for now i really don't want to spend the money on the mhg and just have it start leaking on me

wow a supra owner who knows whats in his wallet. unusual and rare, lol.

I think he meant he doesn't have the money to send it else other than the "local" shop where he lives , there may not be a shop that's close to him that he trust. (I think that's he meant).
