My tranny is currently the weakest part of my car. It makes a bit of noise when I'm on the gas in most gears. Never 4th, but every other has some noise. The tranny has plenty of miles and had very little fluid when I got the car. I think its just worn out. Any estimate on a tranny rebuild? $500? $2000? I really have no experience working on transmissions, but am very willing to learn.

Is Aamco a good place to check into for a rebuild? Anyone have any suggestions as to what measures to take to remedy my noisy tranny? I switched to MT-90 and it helped ever so slightly, but no much. Does it take time for that oil to work in and quiet it? It really sounds like I have some toasted bearings or something.

I may just not worry about it and throw in a new tranny if this one dies. :dunno:

Any suggestions?

Okay, I think you've had enough time to clean up the engine bay... it's time for you to come over.

I bought my w-58 from the forsale section for a $100, the most i was quoted from anyone was $225. Im sure thats significanly cheaper than a rebuild, just my .02c

Ya, I thought that may be the case. And if i did that, I could take apart mine and learn to rebuild it myself! :) (or at least play around with it)

Ah yes, it would be very educational... but can you afford to have the car down that long? I thought the Supra was your only car?

I'm getting a used one from the place I got my engine. $125! I'm replacing mine because of bad 2nd gear synchros, 4th pops out sometimes, and it grinds like a BITCH going into reverse. Also leaks like a stuck pig.

Um. Reverse is always going to grind.

I could afford a few days. A weekend would be fine. I couldn't send it out. Thats why I was thinking more like Aamco or some local shop.

As far as the rebuild kits go, I don't have ANY problem shifting. The tranny feels fine to me. It just whines like a bitch. Would new synchros and the other things in the rebuild kits really do me a lot of good? Sorry, my tranny knowledge is weak to say the least.

CRE will see it tomorrow and might be able to explain it in more technical terms than myself.

Thanks for the info so far guys.

I would wait for a low mileage W58 to pop up...or make a post in the WTB section...I'm sure several people on here have W58's just laying around because they switched to the R154 when they went turbo...

Good idea. I may do that as soon as I get my engine tested. I want to be sure to catch a bhg before it eats my engine alive. ;)

The tranny is just an annoyance for now, so we'll see.

Sure its the trans. whining, and not the pinion bearing? If it is the trans., just wait for a good used one and swap it out. You have to have a press and a bearing splitter to take it apart.
