Who told you that?
I converted a 89 Grey Plug, seen in my "New 7M Build" thread a while back.
It was an 89 grey plug 7MGTE auto. Car was 100% stock when I bought it. I verified it was turbo and auto by the VIN plate by the drivers door and the VIN number as well.
I used an R154 out of a 91 turbo Supra and swapped it into the car using a crossmember from an 87 turbo Supra. Everything lined up perfectly, no cutting at all. That car has been sold and is now a 2JZ swap with the same R154.
Again, zero cutting at all and it was a late 89, I believe it was made in 8/89 or 9/89. It has a lot of equal space on both sides of the transmission as well.
