Could come from many reasons. Too many cars, short on money. Blown motor, accident = total. Could always be a stolen car.

Could be, could just be someone who doesn't know how to get the car to pass smog, BHG & they want something newer instead because they don't understand the vehicle, it gets in a huge wreck and it's too much to repair...

Usually more to gain parting the vehicle out instead of selling it to the junkyard if it doesn't run.

Just got curious. I keep seeing part out threads with good parts. I would hate to see my car get stolen and get torn apart like that. I hope they mention where the car is coming from.

The nice ones are guys that decide to get out of the game, try to sell their cars whole, and after a month of lowball offers realize that they can get more money by parting it out. Sad, but what can you do? When you have $15k invested in your car, and you can't get more than $7k for it, well, you tear it down and sell the bits individually.

I'll let you in on one of my somewhat-super-secrets.

Data Dots.

They can be virtually placed anywhere, everywhere. I use them on my school stuff(calculators, laptops, ipods, etc). Don't put any on your exhaust manifold- exhaust anything, for that matter. They're neat, but they can burn. So if your stuff gets jacked and you find it later on craigslist or whatever, you just trace back to the dots. Just don't expect it to 'work' on everything you put it on like common parts.
