alright... here's the deal. i was getting on the highway and as i shifted into 4th the car lost all power and sounded like a go cart. tons of smoke was pouring from the exhaust. i got it back home and took a look at it. i had noticed oil in the #4 cyl. exhaust port. the others were dry. i have an oil catch tank and it's laying horizontally by the brake booster. well, i noticed oil was around the outside of the filter. the car will idle on it's own after it's warmed up but it sounds terrible. smoke is coming out of the exhaust and from the engine. where the timing belt cover is down by the crank pulley. it also idles at about 1500 rpm.....

so, my question is...
if the valve covers can't breathe. what could that do to the engine?...
i'm thinking maybe the timing belt slipped but i haven't had a chance to look at it yet. i just got back from deployment. but i'm not sure if the timing has anything to do with my problem.

it's all white smoke. i've checked all couplers on the intercooler pipes. everything is tight. a guy on SF said that the piston rings could be blown on #4 cyl. he said that the crankcase will try to breathe from somewhere since the air filter on the oil catch tank was clogged with oil. the front main seal is blown now too. never had smoke coming from the crank pulley before.

Thread title was kinda misleading

pvc=poly vinyl cloride

pcv=positive crankcase ventelation

I'm not trying to be a dick, I just read the title and said to myself 'not another mk3 owner trying to rice together a pvc ic system':icon_conf

OK back on topic

well... compression test complete and i found the problem.

CYL
1 . 40-47
2 . 170-175
3 . 165-170
4 . 0
5 . 165-170
6 . 170

so there you have it. that's why she isn't driveable. and would explain why smoke is coming from the exhaust. so i'm gonna replace the piston rings and go from there. as well as main oil seals. the front one is bad i'm sure of.
