problem with my speedo gear

this is for a w58. cable spins freely, but still nothing. to remove the gear will i need to drain the fluid? also i have one out of a mk2 will that work? anything eles i should look for?thanks

No, the mkii gear won't work. It's too small. You should be able to get another gear from the dealer, if you need it. You shouldn't have to drain the fluid, although it might drip or dribble a bit. Pull the speed sensor, and the gear is clipped on the end.

I'd suspect the cable, first.

You do need to drain the fluid... as me how I know... ick. Caught a sleeve/shirt full of gear oil. I reeked for days. :nono:

I'll also add that a speedo drive gear from a R154 will not fit.

ok thanks. i'll check in to the cable first. about how much does the gear cost from the dealer? is there a diff b/t the years?
