Well today i noticed the power steering on my 1J was whining every time i turned the wheel :( So i went to check the fluid level thinking maybe it was low and that i had a leak somewhere. When i pulled the cap off to check. It was kinda frothy with lots of tinny bubbles. Any idea whats up and how to fix it?

sounds like there is air in the system.... i would pour a little more in and turn the wheel from lock to lock a few times and see if it still happens. If so you might have a leak some where, i would check the OLD parts that may still be int here.

What fluid should be put in there? I think it was Dexron or Dexron II. But, I think I put in Dexron III and it has a faint whine, sometimes loud. Would it matter if it has the Dexron III in it?

Maybe this the answer to that might help you as well Bobiseverywhere.

Dexron III is ok to use.

I'm on my 4th (used) powersteering pump... It's a weaklink in the JZ motor. They only last around 100k miles.

You can rebuild them, but it costs as much as a new pump ($400).

What seems to keep them from being too loud is lucas power steering pump stuff.

Well, i just turned the steering wheel form side to side to get the air out, and it seems that there is no air in the system, but there are no leaks that i can find either. Now it seems to be fine with the very minimal whine that it has always had?? i am a little stumped on that one, and why it happened. Also the nice Red ATF i put in there is more of a brown colour now, and it has only been about 7K km like 5K miles????

If i don't get them for free, yeah....

Silly kids with SC300 1JZ swaps around here locally don't know the powersteering pump is universal off the 2JZGE they took out. They usually sell the whole 2jzge for under $100 bux. ( i buy those too and part em out once and a while )

not to jack your thread, but while were on the topic of power steering

i had my jza70 at the track last weekend, and one lap all of a sudden i had no power steering for a few turns, then it came back again, no leaks, fluid is full, pump doesnt make any noise. has anyone ever had that happen?

only thing i can think of is the fluid got too hot?

I can get you a whole motor for $75 bucks lol.. How about two?

Dan, maybe you overheated it. It takes nothing but hand tools to cut the factory cooler "pipe" and install a good aftermarket bar and plate.

Also, i think the JZA70 has the same system as the SC300, dual mode steering. After 45mph, the system shuts off and goes into a bypass circuit.
