Hey guys,

First post, looks like you've got a great forum going for the mkiii! I'm a rotorhead myself but my gf has an na mkiii that was given to her by her father and its got an issue I don't know much about.

The first time this was known to happen was then she was on the freeway attempting to shift to fourth, but rather shifted into 2nd gear. She was on the freeway but in some traffic (I actually wasn't there so not 100% on all this) and apparently the tach stayed within redline but power-steering was gone. Her and a friend pulled over, and I was later told it was a snapped PS belt. Had it fixed, about 2 months later I was driving the car myself and brought the revs up and just like that, power steering cut out and the belt was broken.

Her father told her he had a "JDM motor" put in w/50,000 miles but I'm somewhat weary of this, it looks like a factory 7MGE from what I can tell. The chassis (or at least odometer) has 234,626 miles on it (86.5) so I am sure the motor has at least been rebuilt, if not swapped - there are absolutely no other issues such as smoking, fluid burning, or power loss. Don't see any signs of head/head gasket issues either.

So, anyone have any insight as to why the PS belt keeps breaking? If I do keep the car myself I'll probably just pull out the PS unit altogether, as long as this problem can be determined not to cause issues elsewhere.

^Indeed, or it could be deteriorating.

Check to see if everything lines up.

a bent bracket, pulley, or missing PS brace could also be the issue.

Belt too tight? Check the crank pulley and make sure it's not loose.

I'll check it out to make sure its got the proper deflection. I didn't do the replacements on the car myself, she took it to a shop so not sure. It did happen 2-3 times though so I'm fairly certain there's more to the situation than simple incorrect installation.

I'll snoop around for anything bent or that looks out of place as well. I'm fresh to this platform but hey, gotta start learning somewhere :biglaugh:

Thanks for the quick responses guys
