I was looking at my 1990 targa top, 7mgte, abs, tems supra and noticed something wierd!

My vin code under the hood is ma70-***7064

My vin code around the rest of my car (doors, dash, everywhere else) says jt2ma71n4l0***064.

I've never looked into vin codes and how they are made for each car but I am sure there shouldnt be 2 vins on a car!

Also, isnt a turbocharged supra after the year 1987 coded ma71?

I am now scared to take my car to get registered into my name

Ma70 means it's originally non turbo...71's are turbo...i don't know about Cali but here in pa it's not illegal too convert to turbo.

I understand that, but what I dont understand is why I have 2 different vin codes, I ran the vin code that was under the hood and it said it wasnt even valid! my other vin has like 18 records, but I cant see them cuz I didnt pay!

cool to know that this is normal!

I just noticed that on the sticker on my door it has both vin codes, the same from under the hood (ma70) and the same one everywhere else (ma71)

any info on this?

BTW, anyone have something to check what these 18 records are on my car?

All my vin numbers are the same way yours are. I never thought anything of it though. I guess its something I may need to look in to. As for the records on the car, Id say carfax would probably be the fastest and easiest. Im not sure how much it is though but they give you an entire history report on the car.

I used them for my acura legend.

Edit:
1 CARFAX Report for $29.99
10 CARFAX Reports for $34.99
Unlimited CARFAX Reports for $39.99

That is perfectly normal. The under hood is the internal toyota code. The JT2 that is in your door and on your dash signals that it is a Toyota. As far as your car being an MA70 body, that isn't uncommon either. Toyota didn't know it would have such demand for turb cars, so they started putting turbo stuff in bodys that were meant to be NA.

IIRC since MA70 was the original chassis code and they made no change to the chassis for the turbo models there are very few (if any) turbo cars that have MA71 stamped on the firewall.

thanks for the info! So the jt2 number is my actual vin code (of course) and the extra number on my chassis is my chassis code. The chassis code is just to classify the type of chassis it is, just like the paint code, engine code and differential code. The power of knowledge. Thanks for the info everybody.

No no no....

MA70 is the CHASSIS code, NOT the VIN number. There are no MA71 chassis codes. No it doesn't matter if it's NA or Turbo (they never got NA's in Japan, same chassis code).
