parts needed for oil filter.

Hey everyone.

I am just asking a question for a friend that is planning on getting an automatic supra. He realizes that he will need an oil cooler to keep the tranny from breaking in the long run. What he wants to know is what exact parts are needed for this? There is alot of info on this I just don't think there is a thread that states exactly what parts you need for a good setup. If there is, forgive me. He is looking for something that will cool the oil enough for around 280-300 rwhp.

So what would he need? He knows he needs an oil relocation kit. Will this due?

He needs an oil cooler. Which one would you reccomend? He doesn't want to have to do mods to fit it in. What else does he need other than those two things?

If you are planning to use that Kit for the tranny, you do not need the filter adapter....the piece that screws on the block or filter head on the motor.

Is he planning to use the stock auto tranny cooler in the radiator or change over to an air cooled type?

This is actually very simple:

You will have to figure out how many and what kind of push on fittings to get....it will be 2 per run of hose, except where you mate to the stock tranny lines...a clamp is needed here.. AN-8 hose fits the tranny lines.

You will also need 2 - 4 1/2" NPT-AN fittings depending on if you use the stock cooler or not.

You route the hose from the pressure side of the tranny pump (its the forward line in the housing) to the "in" port on the filter head. Secure to the tranny pressure line with a clamp. You will need this head + 2 of the above 1/2" NPT-AH fittings for the filter head:

Part # 1791 3/4-16 thread for the filter...scroll down...the dual in/out ports give you flexibility. I mounted my tranny filter just behind the fog light on the passenger side.

Go from the "out" port on the filter head to the cooler...then from the cooler to the return line on the tranny. It's the aft line on the tranny housing, secure with a clamp.

I would use a stock size PureOne filter for 500 miles or so, then switch to one of these...model # TI-10S:

This is a by-pass filter. It will cause very little line pressure drop and will filter down to the 1 micron level. These are perfect for an auto tranny...filters will go at least 10,000 miles filtering tranny fluid. It will remain a clean as new.

If you go with an air cooled tranny cooler, you can mount it under the drivers side forward of the wheel well. I suggest a cooler with a fan since this is not in the car's air flow:

The BMM-70298 is the Cadillac...it has a thermally controlled fan that activates above 160 (the A340 likes fluid temps of 180 deg).
If you use this type cooler, you will need 2 more 1/2" NPT-AN fittings.

I also recommend a tranny fluid flush, if it has not been done recently. Castrol Dex III or Toyota Type I-V.

Nope...you can use the stock radiator cooler and save a chunk there. I always advocate running a filter on the tranny...you don't have to use the Trasko...stock size oil filters do fine.

You'll have to do the math yourself for the $$$.

I got part #'s in there for the oil strainer and oil pan sealer.

I got the cooler that he is talking about and mounting it is a breeze still have yet to see how well it does.

~$350 for the oil cooler w/ shipping
~$70 for the hoses and npt fittings.
~$120 for a bunch of royal purple atf
~$40 for new oil strainer and pan sealer from toyota
~$10 for having some accumulator shims made.

Thats just ballpark.
