Paint and Body shops in SoCal?

Well I went around looking for estimated on paint and body work and to my surprise, the whole industry has changed. All the local independent companies charge so much because of environmental laws and such and they usually only take insurance claims to stay afloat. Other bigger shops and colision centers want 4-5k for the job.

With that said, does anyone know of someone who can do good prep work and spray the car to the paint code with a nice base and clear coat? Im hoping someone has a hookup and knows someone who needs business because these prices are more than I expected to pay.

The only other option, which many of them told me was for them to do all the body and prep work, then they would send it to 1-Day paint n body to spray. This would cost around $1600.00 but its still morethan I expected to pay.

TIA

Well I can't answer your question completely, but I was recommended to a Body Shop down the street from me in Corona by a good friend who had one of his cars painted there. The guy has his own paint booth. I went by there about 4 months ago to get an estimate on my 91T. He said about $1400 and 2 weeks using the good paint. I did not press for details as I was not ready to get the car painted yet.

Kimmels Body Shop

Owners name is Jorge and he speaks very little English.

BTW, my friend loved his paint work. I can hunt down an address and phone # if interested.

Earl Scheib or Macco are the only ones around here that are going to do a <$1500 paint job on a mk3. PJ Bonafacio does some nice work, he's in City of Industry area. I would not expect it to be less then $1500 though. Your paint is good though, you should have PJ color sand it and touch up any scratches. It can look very good still.

There's a shop called AR Auto Body in Palmdale 661-538-9663.

One of the guys who works there's name is Matan, he owns a mk4 supra that is being restored over there (all be it very slowly since they only work on it when they're not busy and they're always busy).

Anyhow he quoted me about $3000-4000 for a complete restoration job and a full proper paint job taking a lot of trim and other peices off. I have a feeling once I show him my car's hatch and wheel wells the price may go up to $5000 or so plus I have a lot of little projects I want to do like vertical doors, new custom front bumper, etc.

But if your car is in pretty decent condition rust wise he might do it for $2000-2500, give them a call.

Once I get all my body stuff together I'm going to get a more firm estimate and shop around. Let me know what you end up doing.

Yeah I get that feeling too Aaron.
I went over the paint, and where the factory paint and clearcoat is, it can be polished out to a nice shine, but there are 2 large areas on both sides where it was spray with crappy paint (part of the doors and fender) and would have to be sanded and sprayed, and to blend I think they would be painting a good portion of the vehicle at that point. So I may just go with what the local guy suggested and have them do all the body work..get it nice and smooth and ready for paint then they will take it to the 1 day place where he ends a lot of this type of work, and get it sprayed with an additional coat of clear.

As for the other responses, thank you for the info... I will decide on what to do very soon here as I really do want the paint done because it bugs be bad driving around with paint that isnt in a condition that I approve :)

hey, I just remembered. I have a friend that paints cars... he did my AE86 and it came out fantastic. He does it out of Cerritos College and I think he charges $600 plus paint. I'll call him tomorrow.

Thats an option id be willing to take as long as he does body work along with paint. Otherwise, I could still get the body work done seperatly, but id rather do it all in one continuous step rather than body, then having to drive it somewhere else myself and get it painted.

Thats a beautiful car and paint there!
