oil leak into spark plugs

To make things clear, I've done a search but couldn't find anything that gave me the answer i needed.

I have oil increasing in the spark plugs through cylinders 1 though 6, 1 being the least and 6 being the most. I just replaced the spark plugs and got my car running. I would let my mk3 sit for 15 mins and the car would bog out and shut off. When i checked the spark plugs after, i saw oil on them again. Do you think it could be my spark plug seals? Do 7mgte's even have spark plug seals? I went to schucks today to look for some and it didn't show up on their computer. A friend told me that it could be a leak in my head gasket but I just replaced it.

Any thoughts?

Just to be clear...do you have oil on the spark plug tips (from inside the cylinder) or oil in the spark plug wells (outside the motor)?

The spark plug valley (outside the motor) "seals" on the center cover with the plug wires sealing around the individual holes. Leaky cam cover gaskets will get oil in the individual wells though.

jdub, i believe they're inside of the cylinders. when i take out the spark plug wires, only the end would have oil on them so i doubt it would be from the valve cover gaskets. otherwise there would be oil on the whole plug correct? i took off that center gasket piece but kept the hex bolts on because the center gasket piece was cracking. though i don't think i tightened them all the way.

i plan to buy a new center gasket and what is needed to hopefully get my car running this friday.

IDEA: not sure if this may help but my a/f mixutre gauge reads rich at idle, it always had. i heard it's supposed to be at stoich but thats another thread. anyways, if it's a leak or improper seal at the head gasket, would the a/f gauge read it like it would do to a bhg?

valve cover gaskets just tighten them up

im with this guy..leaky valve covers..i would rather get new vavle cover gaskets and that bolt kit driftmotion sells..dont forget to use rtv on the corners where its 90degress where the hump starts on the valve covers.

did you take out the spark plug and check the tip see if theres any oil residue on it?

i had this problem..my spark plug wires were oily as well..so i change the wires, spark plugs and valve cover gaskets..never had a problem since =]

Well, since it's the #1 and #6 plug, they share the same coil, and they fire at the same time, it make me suspect an ignition problem with those two plugs. You may also have oil from leaky seals or poor rings. Swap two coils around and see if you get the same thing on the same plugs or if if it "moves" to another cylinder pair. Might want to check the plug wires too.

An ignition failure will cause a rich AFR...it's not due to a BHG.

If the hex bolts holding the center cover in place are not tight, you will get an oil leak into the plug wells.

And I think this one is saying he removed the 3rd valve cover thing that covers the spark plug valley. Its probable that the oil is leaking from the 4 huge allen bolts in the center. That aluminum cover is also a gasket, and removing it removes that gasket. Some people replace it, others seem to use either O-rings, or some other way to seal those up, and fix the issue. If tightening the valve covers down, and or replacing the gaskets doesnt work, check the 4 big allen key plugs in the plug valley. Oil on top of the plugs by the plug wires is not a BHG. Oil in the combustion chamber could be a few things.

thanks, can one of the mods sticky that link above or copy it so SM users can use this very useful information?

i think that might be the problem, i'll look into that. also i tried it again today and noticed that only cylinders 1 and 2 had oil in the wells. there was a small puddle in the gallery (only in one and two) but i cleaned that up. any reason why it'd go from 1 through 6 to only one and two?
