oil in turbo

Hey guys got a question. I am finishing up my redo of the rear hatch fixing rust and replacing seals. I started inspecting some of the engine components I received with the car and noticed that there was an oil like residue (which I assume is oil) coating the inside of the turbo. The turbo itself has 0 shaft play, no damage to the prop, and spins smoothly. However, I did notice that the metal oil inlet tube was not on correctly (actually it was only being held on by a single screw). Would this cause the oil inside the turbo or is there another culprit I should be looking for? Also what is the best way to clean and prep this to be put back on the car? I was thinking of just utilizing a foam based engine cleaner but am not entirely sure that would be ideal.

If your PVC is still hooked up stock that's normal. The vent pipe coming off the top of the heads recirculates back in to the accordian hose in front of the turbo, thus the oil residue :). If you want to eliminate that you can put a catch can in the system to catch the vented oil residue while still recirculating the air back in to the intake.

Oh ok wasn’t sure if that was normal or not. As for how it was hooked up I couldn’t tell you as the turbo that was on the engine went to a different project and this turbo was sourced separately. It really makes things interesting trying to figure out what’s what and why since the cars rolling chassis, turbo, engine, and soon tranny will all have been sourced separately. But hey that’s what happens when you inherit someone else’s project car.

Na Barkz, it was my father in law’s project before he switched to a 35 so I trust the information he gave me, however the information that was given to him by all of the original owners is the question. He drove the engine and tranny on the donor car before it was pulled. However, he took the turbo off the engine to put on one of the other 4 Supra’s so he sourced a different one that looks to be in really good condition other then the oil residue in it which I wasn’t sure about, but sounds like it’s normal.
