hey guys, got a friend coming down on friday to look at that starter problem on his 89.

quick review of the starter prob - will start fully cold or fully hot, but not warm (after a half hour or so, gotta let it cool then start again).

only thing i know to do is check the wiring for the starter, and the 'noid itself, as well as the grounding points.

can you 1j owners (or anyone else that knows) list the locations of the grounds, and pics if possible?

There is the main engine ground that bolt from the battery negative to the block under the PS pump. There should be a small ground wire on the back of the head. A body to engine ground that bolts the the back of the block by the clutch slave cylinder and one last ground for the transmission on the transmission mount. Check those grounds and remove the positive cable to the starter and clean both terminals or simply replace with 4 or 6 gauge amp or welding wire (what I did).

did you replace all grounds with that wire, or just starter?

and is this on a stock 1j or a swapped 1j?

This is on my swapped 1jz in my 87. And I only replaced the starter power wire with I think I used 6 Gauge welding wire. However if your having so much trouble start off with that power wire and cleaning the contacts. Then move on to the other grounds. Check there isn't a fuse that is corroded but not blown (happened to me, took forever to figure it out).
