So here is the deal I recently picked up a 87 7m block from a buddy of mine who is going 1J. The block was just machined roughly 1800-2000 miles ago. It has stock rods with arps,Je pistons (40 overs) and a head with oversize ferreas in it with new stock springs. Being a curious person I pulled the motor apart to find the rod bearings with some stripes apearing not a cut but places where the clevite coating was wearing away is that normal for the mileage??? This motor has seen 3 oil changes MAX from the day it was built to now i assume that plays a part in the bearing condition??? The clearances should be on the tight side of factory spec from what I am told. Next issue I am told that this motor had piston slap 24/7 (unless it was winter time) is that gonna hurt me over time?? Alot of newb questions here sorry for that I am just ready for a built motor :) I was looking at just new rings and bearings with a set of eagle rods and arp hardware everywhere. Help me decide just what should be done here.

Thanks in advance
BJ

piston slap ALL the time means that you have too small of piston/rings which can devistate your entire setup. probly bored too much with a piston that didnt match the bore.

correct me if im wrong, just trying to throw out my little knowledge

Just give it all to me....

In all seriousness, I would get another block bored and decked to match the piston recommended clearance. I know this great machinist....

when you say you have piston slap usually means the pistons are to small for the bore but in that case you would have very bad blow by witch would cause the engine to smoke alot now if it didn't smoke i wouldn't jump to any conclusions the noise he was hearing was probably wrist pin slapping, witch i caused by bad bushing or improper install on the rods to pistons. now if that was it then what i would do is take the pistons out get new bushings for the pistons and maybe even new rods get them put on clean out the cylinder walls and get new rings and bearings and put everything back in. Now about those bearing they are probably the old clevite bearings, clevite just came out with a new bearing to prevent that from happening. you might want to micrometer the crank and the rods to make sure there ok. But if they are to far out of spec i would turn the crank and rods 10/10 over stock and order over 10/10 bearings. Then put new bearings in and you should be good to go. There you have it now guy correct me if im wrong please.:icon_bigg
