Moly rings...

where do i find them?the only place i found them at canceled my order i guess they ran out of stock...my machininst is honing my block for moly rings.

Also, stock rings are chrome right?why do people say its bad for our motor?

What do you mean moly rings? They don't make rings out of moly, they coat them.

Chrome = requires a very exact hone to break in properly. Chrome rings are hellishly tough, and can have a hard time working with our seasoned blocks without a proper hone.

Chrome would be short for chromoly (chromium-molybdenum steel)...correct?
Maybe your machinist missed you with his meaning, maybe he ment chro-moly.. :dunno:

thats what i thought and he told me that moly rings are better and easier to seat.i'm not sure if that's what he meant he just mentioned moly rings not moly coated but i believe you.i guess what i'm asking is what the better alternative to chrome rings.i was gonna with chrome since i noticed as soon as i pulled my old slugs out that the rings were chrome but i keep hearing negative stuff about them and my machinist is already honing them for moly or non-chrome rings i guess.

moly rings are generally understood to be the Chro-moly rings.

Plasma coated moly rings are probably what your machinist is looking for. (moly rings are much easier to seat vs chrome)

this is what i was talking about I hope the confusion is not from my part.

looks like i'll call the machine shop tomorow morning and ask him to hone for chrome rings.

if your engine is detonating you've got more serious problems than ring selection. They are also sensitive to dirty air (so I've read). if you run ITBs or no air filter at the track on your turbo car, It's a bad idea to install moly inlaid rings.

the only difference between "moly coated" and "plasma moly" is the application process of the moly on the ring. The idea is that plasma moly resists flaking when exposed to detonation.

that being said, I think I'll use them in my NA depending on how the bore specs out. They allow the ring to conform well to the bore (say if you just honed it instead of bored too), seat easily and seal well.
