The upper ball joint is part of the upper suspension arm. The lower ball joints are usually the ones that wear out...they carry much more stress from the suspension.

Are the ball joints sealed, or can they be re-greased? Bi-Tron just came out with a new grease.

Keep your fingers crossed that it's the lower, the upper cost 6x as much. Yes, the lower are more common.... figures it's one of my uppers that died. Definitely check them before you just start ordering parts.

On the topic of the upper ball joints, does anyone know if it's either possible to or if anyone has had a set of control arms machined to accept a replacable ball joint? I'm looking for a used control arm with a good ball joint and figured that if it 1) could be done safely and 2 could be done for the cost of or cheaper than a regular replacement, it'd be more than worth it. Finding a good joint to use and ensuring structural integrity are the issues.

soup: Do both? By both do you mean uppers and lowers?
The lowers are around $60/ea for good ones, but the uppers are a part of the control arm, and cost $400/ea

Matt: You're the only one who knows whether you need lower or upper ball joints. Get the front of the car in the air and put your hands at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock on the wheel and wiggle it while someone looks at the ball joints to see which are moving.

I'd say 95% of the time it is going to be the lower that is worn out, and it's cheap enough that even if they're not, you might as well replace them anyways. The uppers are going to be expensive, at least $600 to do both sides for the control arms.
