Hi all,

I've been living with this noise since I swapped the 7M into my 1986 4Runner. Everyone that I've talked to either has no clue, or is under the impression that it's not a big deal. I bought the motor with the impression that it had been rebuilt. If it was, I'm assuming that it wasn't done well. I feel stupid for buying a motor without listening/testing it, but hindsight is 20/20.
The noise was present with the 4Runner's original transmission/driveline at the beginning of the swap, and was also present with a brand new transmission/clutch/differential/drive shaft package. I then did the valve clearances, hoping that it would solve the problem. Even after checking and re-checking the clearances to ensure that they were correct, the noise persists.

I have used a stethoscope, but I'm really unsure what I'm listening for. I've heard a rod knock from a few different motors, none of which were of Toyota manufacture... This doesn't sound similar to what I've heard.

I haven't observed any negative symptoms --that I'm aware of that is. I'm sure some of the more seasoned Supra mechanics would say otherwise--, power is good, idle is good, fuel economy is good..

I took some recordings while I was driving. I hope this helps. I'm after the clacking noise. What confuses me is how it pulses. I think it's evident in the second video. It's always present, but gets louder with the RPM's... up until I'm going interstate speeds. Then, a mixture of road noise/wind and sustained RPM's above 2300 and the noise seems to disappear.

There has been a small voice in my head telling me that a rebuild is necessary. Is this a correct assumption?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Greg
