Leaking transmission: intermediate plate or output shaft seal?

I seem to make about a dime sized spot of transmission fluid when I leave the car overnight. It's a stock R154 on a 1989. It has a one-piece Al driveshaft and it pools directly under what appears to be the intermediate plate.

Is this common, or is it more likely coming from the back of the transmission? It seems odd that it would all come from the output since the fluid level was actually pretty low and there doesn't seem to be a trail leaking to the bottom.

Has anyone had a leak at the intermediate plate? If I pull the tranny, the TSRM isn't real clear about if I can just take the extension cover and the other side off without everything else falling apart.

Appreciate any inputs!

yes you can take the tail shaft housing cover off and the main case. you will be left with the gearset and intermediate plate in one little bundle. not hard at all.

but you want to be dam positive thats it before you do that. clean it up good then drive it for a while and trace the leak.
