knock sensor/and synthetic oil

I have been serching the forums but couldn't find any direct answer so I figured I would go head and ask, I have spent lots of time testing and trackeing my knock sensor problem down on my 90 7mjge (original engine 113000 miles) N/A supra figured I my be able to get the answer for this q, so my check engine light goes on very intermitantly for instanc it might not apper for a week and then during the middle of a drive to school wala, then nuthing then on (Im going to college for auto tech so got all the scan tools etc, unfort obd 1 limited, I know itsthe knock sensor causing check engine light, and found some craks and tear on wiring to the sensor, but seems like a pain to fix if its not that big of a deal. my cuncern is that when a false signal is sent ( computer thinks car nocking does it start want to run lean to solve the supposed knock? and of thesubject thoughts on upgrading t synthtic oil or should I just stick with wats been working thanks
