I stumbled accross this site today and thought it was pretty cool. If you have ever heard of "micro finance", that's basically what this is. You can lend people in impoverished countries small amounts of money ($25 minimum) for stuff like goats or fertilizer. You also get all your money back as the borrower repays.
Kiva.org transfers the money through various lending institutions depending on where the borrower is located. You can view the statistics for each lending institution including defaults and delinquencies. I haven't seen one yet that has had any defaults or delinquencies.
