The previous owner of my supra somehow broke the key off inside the ignition column. It is an '87 turbo. Do I need to get a whole new ignition column assembly, or IF I can get the key out can they cut me a new one with the half of the key? What do I need to do?

All this supra stuff is pretty new to me, so go easy.

Thanks in advance.

no need to do that you can pop out the ignition easy enough, is there enough room to turn the ignition to Run? If so just take apart the column assembly and get a thin screw driver and pop put the ignition cylinder and go to a junkyard or get a cylinder set from a member, or better yet get a cylinder based on your VIN from a yota dealer so you will have all the correct keys etc.

call yota first and see if they can order a cylinder and key set for an 87 sup with your VIN.

get the key out, or have a locksmith get the key out. If you have another key, then have it copied. If you don't have another key, take the key you've got, your license, and the title to the car, and go to the dealership. They MIGHT be able to cut you the key off the VIN number, but they only hold on to those numbers for so long. You might not need all the paperwork, but if they cut you a key without it, let me know and I'll go get some vin numbers off cars I want :) (this is all assuming that the title is in your name, if it's not, you'll need the owner to do it)

Why did the key break?? You accidentally?? Or did it break while you were turning it???

If while turning, them you probably have a bad ignition cylinder, and will need to replace it. Or, it may happen again, and in the worst of places to leave you car...that's Murphy's Law in action.

A new cylinder is probably about $ 50. Or the locksmith can rebuild yours. I've had several rebuilt over the years.

Either way, you may wind up having 2 keys on your ring.

I never broke it so I don't know how it broke.

I have to go to the junkyard for a bunch of other parts for this supra, so I will look for a used ignition cylinder assembly.. I'm crossing my fingers that it still has all the parts. Last time I was there, there was only ONE supra in the whole yard.

Thanks

Just get the broken part out...or have a locksmith do it for you.

The Dealer won't have a key code for it, as they didn;t for mine (87 turbo) so you have to get the passenger door's lock cylinder out, and take it to the dealer with you, and cut the new key using the code on the door's cylinder...at least that's what I had to do with mine...

The ignition locks are extremely difficult to get out (at the junkyard) if you don't have a key in it. Although a locksmith may be able to do it. You can get yours out if you can somehow turn it to ACC or ON. Take the plastic housing off of you column, turn the key to ACC or ON, push in the pin on the bottom and slide out the cylinder. You should then be able to push out the key from the back with a dental pick or something small like that. Then take the broken key part to a place and have them make you a new one.

I have an ignition related question....I have to replace my cylinder in an 87....can I swap out a 89 cylinder? Because I have a spare 89 with matching door locks and keys.

Okay thanks, I will try that tomorrow before I pay someone to do it.

Thanks everyone.

Or get a pin and put a drop of superglue on it, press it against the end of the key, wait to dry and pull. I've had to do this on my old car. I took the broken key to a key place and they were able to cut one out of the two pieces.

I took the ignition colum out of the car and tried poking around the end (opposite of key hole) to push the key out but I think it is too jammed in for it to work. I cannot move it.
Both locksmiths in town are closed today, so I will try tomorrow on Monday, see if they can get it out and cut me 2 or 3 new ones.

Thanks

I took it to a locksmith and they got the key out after about 10 minutes worth of work. I got 4 new keys total, plus labour, it cost just under thirty dollars.

Works like a charm now...
