Hi all,
(If this should be in the technical engine section, feel free to move it, but I didn't think it met the merits of being technical by the standards of people on SM).
I have an 86.5 NA 7M with an engine that was put in from a 90 or 92 (again 7M GE). The both of them having 225,000 km on them, but the old owner didn't know when the engine was swapped or how much on the swapped engine.
So I've had it for a few years, its been sitting in the garage for since July 2008 because I don't have the money and it needs new calipers (I put in new rotors). OK, i'm getting long winded. Essentially, i drained out the old gas, put in new gas, and started it up.
It was smoking as much as it is now in the video when I started it yesterday (its 36F outside, btw) (Edit: After toyotavince: For a few seconds after starting it wasn't as smoky, but then became like the video. My 95 corolla isn't producing as much smoke/steam/whatever in this temperature). I'm wondering could this be something like oil or carbon or something built up from sitting for 3 years, or is this a BHG. My oil is clean, my coolant doesn't have oil in it, coolant isn't bubbling at radiator, there's no bubbling noise in the cabin. I was going to give it an italian tune-up thinking that oil build up might be the problem, put now I realize if it is a BHG, its better I catch it at this point before I damage the head or block.
Questions:
1) Is there a test I can do to figure out if it is in fact a BHG? (remove spark plug and look?, or pressure test the cooling system?)
2) What might be the cost to get it done vs doing it myself. Anyone know any good mechanics/machine shops if i end up doing it myself in Vancouver, Canada?
3) I could easily return the calipers I just bought for $400 and walk away from this vehicle. Worth it?
4) If i do the headgasket, what else should i consider doing? timing belt?
Finally, I don't know what I'm doing. I'll follow the tsrm and haynes if I end up doing this myself, but my knowledge is limited to just being mechanically inclined. Maybe I'll PM GrimJack for advice, I haven't met him, but from forums I know he's in the same city as me.
