Do you have a daily driver? If not, forget another project, unless you really like being broke and walking everywhere... ;)

To answer your question though, about the biggest difference in the car itself is the fact that the turbo cars came with a transmission that was a bit stronger.

Pretty much body and interior differences.

If your going to gut it and beat it up I'd get a pre89.

I don't think I will gut it but I am going for mid 500HP and i see when you go with an aem standalone its split up into those body years, i'm guessing the ecu are different between those year ranges

depends on preference. Diff between pre 89 and post 89 are: Front bumper, side mirrors, body molding, tail lights, wing (1 piece vs 3 piece), steering wheels, interior color and exterior color. There are a few more differences but these are the most noticeable. Also some 7m blocks that are 89+ tend to be stronger than the pre 89 ones.

The differentials are the same. Post 89 had two supporting brackets for the sub-frame. These can easily be installed on a pre-89.

Gearing however, is different. 3.91 (87-88 turbo) versus 3.73 in the later turbo cars. Same 8" G-series differential though.
