Hey everyone,

Well I'm not a supra owner, but I am a toyota nut and have a few questions.

I have a 71 Crown thatt I am hoping to transplant a 7mgte into and was curious of a few things... I already know that it will pretty much swap over from my 4m and bolt up, but I was curious of exactly what you need to get one to run... I'm talking O2 sensors, ECU, ect.. what needs to be plugged where... I'm pretty mechanically inclined (have built many carb engines) but have never done anything fuel injected before and wasn't sure about computers.. and was just curious what would be needed...

Thanks for your help.. I'm sure I will probably have more questions down the road.. oh yeah, I do consider my car the first true Toyota sports car... hence the Supra Daddy name.. I just figured I should finish it off right and put in a supra engine :naughty:

You owe me a new keyboard. Stupid testicles....
I can't answer your question but that is a BEAUTIFUL car!

BTW You want to go with an automatic or a Manual Transmission?

Definitely manual... it is the only one that I have seen out of the 30 that were brought in to the US that was a manual so i have all the clutch pedals and everything, I would just have to figure out some kind of linkage but I am pretty good at metal fab so that isn't a probleem... truthfully I just need to find a complete car somewhere in the NW and steal as much as I can off of it... It's getting impossible to find barts for it so if I could change it over to something newer (even suspension wise) I would be better off in the long run considering the MKIII supra's are still so popular and the aftermarket is going strong for them.

Well lets see.

From a noob this is what I can come up with

7mgte ( all pipes hoses, turbo, that kind of stuff)
R154 5spd
A driveshaft (custom most likely)
ECU from whatever motor you have
Clutch and brake cylinders
All of the sensors and such.

Very broad list. Not in detail obviously but yeah.

ok well I'm planning on getting a complete car (would prefer a wrecked one) so i'm just wondering mostly about the sensors... I'm pretty sure I'm going to steal all the downpipe, exhaust, driveline and such to get it all to match up... maybe even the rear end (do they have rear disks? I really don't know) but I guess I really need to know about the stupid little sensors like is there one if your fuel cap isn't on tight enough and stuff... or is there a minimum that I can get away with (fuel pressure, O2, Air Intake, ect...)

Oh and thanks...but your not getting a new keyboard from me... I'm going to be dumping WAY too much money into this car to get this all done right :1zhelp:

The beautiful thing about this car is I can take it to any show... Oldies american, New Import, All toyota... and everyone loves it... but the different crowds see different things (american show= mopar, import show= really big celica)

YOUR CAR IS SO HOT you are so lucky you don't live anywhere near me or I would kill you in your sleep and take it from you.

HellsLegion pretty much has you covered. Your 4M shouldn't have any engine management to speak of, so it should be as straight forward as getting power to the EFI main relay of the wiring harness of the new engine. Then wireing up the starting and charging system. As for a speedo and tach, I don't really know. Hopefully the cable speedo will work.
Converting from low pressure carb fuel supply to a high pressure EFI system will need some consideration. What shape is your fuel tank? That will determine a lot about what you need to do to get an electronic fuel pump in. A flat shallow rectangle won't have any baffels to keep fuel near the pump, so a combination of a lift pump, surge tank, and high pressure in-line EFI pump will be needed. If its a tall type, you can get away with hanging a normal in-tank pump EFI fashion. Just don't let the fuel run too low.

I am doing a somewhat similar swap. I have a 1972 Corona Mark II and I am swapping in a 7M-GE. I bought a Supra as a donor car and pulled everything I thought I would need. Check out my build thread, I think we will have similar issues come up. Look out next week as I start the wiring and fuel supply!

I forgot to add that! I was gonna say go check out Boso's build thread.

These will be the coolest cars ever once done.

Can we get some more pictures of your Crown? Interior, engine bay, trunk and the such?

Dude, I didn't evn know they had Crowns here in USA. WTF... Nice car man...and so are the newer ones as well....

Oh btw, you may want to source this information from Auto sites in Australia / New Zealand, those guys are really good at transplanting engines and making adapters and what not for cars like these.

Sweet.. 4 wheel disks... I'm definitely stealing that... yeah like I said they didn't bring in very many of them in the first place... my dad bought this one new in 71 and we have had it ever since... It has been mine for the last 15 years or so, but it is just time to do something with it...

And Sandy man... I am in Boise too, so if you wanna see what it looks like with most of 2 engines in pieces laying around and it's nose way up in the air without a hood you could come check it out..

as for more pics... here ya go http://www.supramania.com/forums/vbpicgallery.php?do=view&g=292

My ex used to tell me I loved my car more than her... I always told her it was because it was in the family longer.... :naughty:

oh yeah Boso.. you are the man... I will probably be pickin your brain when i actually get a donor car!!!

You had better be making a build thread! Hopefully I can help out. I have a pretty good head start on you, so hopefully I will get a lot of the issues sorted before you even get there! Shoot, I will be asking for your advice I am sure.

I think I saw this swap done over on toymods.net
You will have to register, but definatly worth poking around. Those crazy Aussies have pretty much already done it by the time you got around to thinking it up. Tons of info on these old cars on those forums.

Well from what I know... or have found... there are 3, maybe 4, that are running at all (ok mine was and will again) and there is one that is in socal that someone parted out and haven't heard of since. there is one in Seattle area (I think it mostly runs but not sure), mine (Idaho), and 3 in NJ (guy found one in a garage that had been sitting for 15 years bought it for $1000 bucks!!!)

As for the Aussies, yeah they are big on the swap thing so I will definitely check them out. I'm contemplating whether or not I want to just have this be the time I do a full body off on it or just get it together mostly... haven't figured that one out yet. It will be fun either way, but I will try when I get everything going to do a build thread on it... hopefully when it is done I can make it to some shows and meets for everyone... Supra's in Vegas sounds good to me!!

I'd love to... it's just the unfortunate fact that toyota has discontinued 95% of the parts for this car, so upgrading is a must unless I want to spend the money to have everything fabricated. But trust me, if any part ever comes off of this thing, it goes into storage... we have never thrown anything away from it, we even have old light bulbs that have just become too corroded to work, but they are origional parts.

does anyone know what the width of the rear wheels are approx? just with a tape measure or what not, I'm just curious how close the rear ends would match up width wise...
