do you know the actual likely hood of a profitable and long lasting hosting service is?

I have owned 3 web hosts, 2 of which provided VOIP, and Dedicated Gaming Servers. Both failed miserably, the hosting market is SO over saturated with crappy companies and little 12 year olds w/ mommy's paypal acct's its rediculous.

Don't get me started, may god hope your company is an actual Dedicated Server company and not a reseller or i will have to bring pain to your world. I HATE RESELLERS!:naughty:

BTW, your prices are high for what your offering. Back when i was doing hosting i was offering $1 per gb of space and 10gb of bandwidth. I rented dedi RH & Fedora *nix boxes out of Vermont via Serverbeach and Tomsyer.com (AKA Layered Tech). Came with cpanel and all the goodies. Ever look into a script called WHM Autopilot, that is if your servers are managed by Cpanel..Its a totally automated hosting script. For automation of signups and payment and management, its one VERY kick ass script and ive got a free key for it if you ever feel you want it :)

Appears your renting Dedi's out of G3 Technologies for adigitalhost.com. Reselling the dedi's i suppose, and sellling off space off one of your dedi's rented from there?

adigitalm.com's IP blocks are owned by hostek.com renting space off a 3rd party hosting company is a smart idea :)

Anyways,
Just figure i would wish you luck w/ what your offering. How long have you been up and running, whats your actual client base like?

Advanced Digital Media is a full service Web Design / Web Development, and Web Hosting company serving our customers since 1996.
I don't think we are going out of business any time soon the business is only growing. And yes they are our servers.

edit: We are using Helm and are not using the auto signup so that we can reduce the fraud risk. Also we are not going for the "cheap" market, this is bringin plenty of business and the "cheap" market only means less money for more work. Generally the couple buck customers are whiny and always expect more than the ones paying real amounts of money. Ironic huh?

Oh no i totally agree,
I was a one man operation last year and i certainly know what you mean by the whiny guys. most were 12 years old that had a paypal acct and would whine about every little thing. Fraud was never a huge issue with my servers then again i was never that huge. Then again i didn't have more than 500 clients between one period.

I never meant to imply that you were going out of business i simply was stating a fact that the market for hosting companie's is so over saturated with poor companies and little kiddie hosts that its very hard to become a prominent profitable hosting provider that people can trust. Just because so many people have been burned so badly. Its finally good to see someone that at least buys their dedicated server and spends the money to manage it themselves. Good Job :)

Never meant to come off like an ass or anything

So are you still doing it? How are things going for your business, are you just hosting or programming too?

I actually dabble in free hosting for friends and PHP/MySQL mostly. I host several sites off of a End User hosting account from dreamhost.com (crappy) you get what you pay for.

I got 25gb Space 1tb bandwidth with rollover monthly increases of .25GB a month on on space, i also go a free .com domain all for $9/year. The hosting is shady though it goes up and down at least once a month if not more.

I currently own &/or host:
supra-tsrm.com
azsupracentral.com
forgotten-legion.com
forsaken-blade.com
ororganik.com(i dont own, a friend does)
2wodesigns.biz(i dont own, a friend does)
7mpwr.com

and a bunch of sub domains for friends all on the same acct with about 20gb disk space still free. I also might be starting a free classifieds site like craigslist but more feature rich.

I have been wanting to start up another web/voip/game hosting business lately but i know its got a high probability of not making any income or failing within 6 months.

As far as programming goes, i get bored and design a php script or two and sell them on the web for cheap. Or ill get bored at work and throw together some sort of PHP/MySQL based script to help me @ work somehow. Other than that i kinda got out of the whole design/hosting scene. I would love to get back into it though

Yeah I know what you mean just to get started it took about 40k to get it going properly and it does help that we already had the design clientele so we were able to get up a little less painfully.

its expensive starting a hosting service thats worth something.. If i were to do it again i would either get a very reputable reseller acct to start off and then i would switch off to a dedi server once the cliental got better. Personally ive had a dow's based server and a *nix based server. I love the nix based more. i think nix handles resources and manages processes alot better.

whats your client base like though, how many clients do you host, how many servers?

We are on 25 different servers but most of those servers only have a couple site on them per server because we have some very large companies like shakespeare and such. Also we have built some very extensive programs that require their own server to operate at peak performance. By no means do we ever over sell servers and that is where a lot of problems come in with the reseller companies they overload the servers and then you get poor performance with them.

The other problems with resellers is the lack of support issues with resellers.

We have under 100 hostees but as stated they are large corporations and so the prices you saw on the site is only regarded to a handful of customers. We just recently taken on customers such as those because we figured we have the servers we might as well hit up the small business too.

The problem there is that none of them own any servers they just lease part of a server from hosting companies.

uh, his statement "it isn't expensive to begin with" is ever so wrong, not to say it isn't legit, but $25 Does that include the machin itself or is that just a server lease. Either way it's a good deal but... Also does it include any previous clientele or just the machine?

Probably just the machine,
If anything id whipe the old clientel and start fresh, probably keep it private and sell off the space to people i trust/know. Probably use it as a storage server for files and music. Ive got 60gb of Music im just itching to share :)

Way to put this thread backontopic 92T4L, Exander AIM me: ThirdGenSup if you wanna talk some more about this stuff im afraid we have derailed the thread LOL

Also it seems that he doesn't own any of the software liscences either that those are leased as well.
