hooray! a new problem!

but i am prety sure i have narrowed it down to three things, and i want your guys' input.

my car's battery finally was just done. so, my moms friend gets me a used one, but one that still had some life left in it i guess, and it worked fine for like...a week?

now, MAYBE my car will start. and i don tknow if my alternator is goin out, or if my starter os bad now, or maybe...just maybe...the battery itself still wasnt good?

i am pretty sure though it is either battery or alternator.

i hope its the battery. the car sometimes acts like it will start, and it will if i just hold the key long enough. sometimes <most of the time> it acts like the battery is dead....i turn the key and its just NOT going to start...

so..any guesses?

gah..alternator...those are about 300 bucks huh? thats CRAP!....i dont have that kind of money just yet...it isnt pay day hahaha...credit card here i come..lol.

but are you sure its the alternator?

could be the starter getting weak or the starter relay.
get a voltmeter and check and see what your battery's voltage is at idle.

Yep, I am. Had the same problem. The starter could be just the "bonus". PITA getting the old one out and a new one in. Instead of getting a new alternator and starter I´d go with a used one since you´re low on cash and spare the money for a complete rebuild in the near future.

For the love of GOD do not guess! Those three items: starter, battery and alternator are probably the three easiest components on any car to test! It's High School auto shop level shit!

If you want to know how to test them we can help you with that. If you do not have the equipment to test them take all three to an auto parts store and have them bench tested or take the vehicle to someone who can test them.

Other than that you should just by a new alternator, a new battery, a new starter, ignition switch, relays, fuses and a harness. That will eliminate any more guess work.

2. remove the positive battery wire
3. if your car dies, replace the alternator. if not, move to the next thing

i put my foot in my mouth when i suggested that before.
if you can,pull off the alt and have a friend drive you to have it tested.
put the battery on a charger so you know your getting proper juice.
