Hole in my water pump (pics)

WTF is this?

I've read that this is either a 'freeze plug' of some sort, and also heard that the hole is there for when the pump is on its way out....anyone else know? Either way, its leaking and is a huge pain in my ass.

Man, you don't want a hole in your water pump. Better plug that up with some JB Weld!

No, seriously, it's called a weep hole. If you ever see water coming from that, the seal in your waterpump has died, and you need a new water pump. It's normal, as long as it stays dry!

Dammit, I guess that means my seal is shot then. Its not a high pressure piss out of it or anything, just a steady weak stream of drops.

If its leaking through there u need to change it, time to buy a new one, U have officially found one of two things that usually goes out on the 1J, water pump or twins. I have gone through both

That is where my water pump is leaking from as well. I have gone through all 3 of the major 1JZ problems. Replaced the water pump, twins and the ecu.

without the weep hole... you would not know your pump seal had failed untill the fan cam flying off and goes threw radiator...

Thats why its there...

I was lucky to source a used 1j pump locally for $45! I really want to keep the hydrofan, so I looked everywhere I could.

Haven't had to deal w/ the ecu yet, and hopefully never, cuz I have a hotrodded Blitz. 2 yrs ago I had an oil seal go out on the front twin, but luckily I was planning on an upgrade already and ended up throwing these babies on.
