Thinking about purchasing it from a friend to replace my blown twins... it has a .96 back housing but im not sure if the 1j can handle that efficiently.. anyone here have feedback from a .96 a/r ?

seems a bit big for 2.5 liters of displacement.. i dunno though, do you have a flow map for the turbo? I'll guess that you wont start building boost until probably 4700-5200 unless you have a tuning device with an anti-lag setting...

Just my $.02

You will be alright with a .96 ar on that turbo. Lag is overrated. My friend had a t04s down here on a 1jz with a stock head and block with a .68 and that turbo would spool quick but it would loose steam on the top end. A .96 ar changed that, and he only lost about 500 rpm spool time on a high gear accelerator punch. If he downshifted to a lower gear, lag would be almost non existent.

Only 500rpm ? Seems Decent... How much boost was he running ?

are you sure that the turbo spools only 500 rpms later? i would imagine it would spool much later than that?

17 psi, stock intake mani, blitz ecu and 31x12x3 IC. I would think the blitz ecu attributed to earlier spoolup due to more aggressive mapping, but a 1jz will spin a .96 on a t04e fairly well.

I would also like to comment on the "dying up top" thing concerning a .68AR... I have a friend that has a .68 on his Supra and he still trapped at 136 mph on his 67mm WITH A CRAPPY START AND CRAPPY TIRES. So to pick up almost 140 mph:icon_evil in the 1/4mi def is proof that it was not dying up top. This is a MKIV, but still... he does not have the rpm range that the 1j does. So don't believe the hype. You probably would have a little more up top with the larger AR but that doesn't mean the smaller AR is dying off... also look at your DP and exhaust to help free up any restrictiveness. hth

Are you talking about a 67mm compressor wheel turbo? I haven't seen a 67 trim t04e turbo. Check the specs on the turbo. A to4s will spool fairly good with a .96 a/r but with a 67mm compressor it will not.

I run a .58, and it doesn't lose steam. I have made 500+ rwhp, with a torque curve that flattened out around 4700rpm all the way to 8000rpm. Maybe you need to revisit your statement.

My turbo is a .68 a/r and I dyno'd it with a blitz ecu rev it out to 8k and it never died.....
So In my opinion that too is a myth.
you want proof I got the sheet to prove it!

OH and another thing. Lag is only really a problem in 1st gear.
