are these things the weakest part of the cooling system or something? this is the second one in a month. is there a limit as to how hard the clamp must be in order not to break the plastic nipple the hose connects too?

Are you replacing the broken ones with used ones? That may be the issue. All the heat they're seeing over the years makes the plastic rather brittle.
Personally, the only part around there i keep having trouble with is the damned VSV that controls the valve. I'm going to try the Mercedes VSV as listed on the SOGI site.
