Is the oem headgasket a one layer gasket or 3 layer like the hks or cosmetic gaskets are ..

Its a composite gasket that compresses when tightened down. Its made completely differently than a multi layer gasket.

OP, you're confusing a Metal Head Gasket (MHG) with the factory mkiii Composite Head Gasket. The OEM gasket is mostly graphite with inserts for the cylinders, oil passages and coolant jackets. The OEM composite gasket has more "give" and compresses more when installed. It requires a less perfect finish.

A MHG, on the other hand, requires a near mirror finish on both the head AND the block to seal. When an MHG does seal, it will hold far more power than a composite.

For anything near stock power a composite head gasket works well.
