yeah, turn your num lock off. If you used a USB keyboard, it probably set your numlock on by default.

It's probably an Fn/Something Key Combination.

My laptop does that all the time when I use a USB keyboard.

It turns the right hand side into the mapping of the 10key you would have on a normal keyboard.

And thank You, Grant, I appreciate your respect.

Mods- Feel free to move this to Off Topic if need be.
ss91, it was a physical breakdown of the drive detected by the SMART system. the data is preserved, but the drive is unbootable. so I am using an XP install CD and it gets to the point where it will restart and the setup will continue, but setup doesn't continue... it just restarts.
I've tried repairing the existing installation of XP, which I mirrored to another drive, but the admin password has changed...

SS91, this harddrive has been partitioned. I attempted to create a partition in the unused portion of the drive, but it simply ignores my command. I believe you type C to create a new partition in the setup process, but it is as if I had not typed anything, so I'm forced to install into the main partition.
I then created a new folder so that I didn't ruin my existing operating system, because I want to keep any personal files that may be contained in the original folder. It goes through the entire initial install process and then when it reboots, it starts from scratch again...
