i did set everything at tdc when i started and i aligned the cps as to perspective according to the tsrm. and i still couldnt get it to idle right, so i turned it a tooth or tooth and finally got it to idle right adn when i looked at the timing mark on the crank compared to the mark on the block and it was way past 15 degrees btdc. and no i didnt connect the terminals on hte diagnostic box, really never had to do it before so i didnt think i had to do it this time.

The thing I don't really understand is why you are trying to set timing in a way inconsistent with the factory directions.

I don't understand any of my cars systems as well as JJ does, I wish I did. In absence of this knowledge, I do my best to follow the instructions that are readily available.

Basically this thread went as follows:

You asked: why is my timing off?

I asked: did you follow the directions?

You said: no.

And your reason was: just because.

ok sorry for hte misclarification. but wut i was trying to say was how come my timing has to be so far off in order for my car to idle right. b/c when i set it at 10degrees it just wants to cut off and idle like crap.

If you did not jump the diagnostic block the timing is not set properly.

It could certainly be something else - but since we know you did not set ignition timing properly, I am asking you to go and do it again per TSRM specs.

If that is not clear enough - what I want you to do is:

Verify that when the Crank is at 0 degrees your cam gear marks line up with the marks on the rear timing belt cover.

Take out the CPS and align the drilled mark per the TSRM.

Jump the diagnostic block per the TSRM

Adjust timing per the TSRM

Again, this may NOT be what is wrong with your car. But if you can't put the effort in to attempt to time the car properly, not many people are going to want to put the time in to help you.

There are certainly other things that can cause your condition - I would suggest that after you set your timing properly, if you are still having issues, you check out the troubleshooting guides in the TSRM. They will give you an idea of what types of items could be causing your problem.

If, after you have gone through the correct procedures you still can't figure out what is going on, then report back to us with details.
