My brothers oldsmobile engine needs replaced and all the junkyards in the area dont have any 2.8's available but we have an extra 3.1 out of an early grand prix here at the shop. Does anyone know of any sites that happen to have any info on what is going to be needed to swap this over?

Can you get ahold of a Michtell repair manul? Even though it is late model, the gut is saying it is still GM, and should be painless.

seein as a 3.1 is a stroked 2.8....just switch all the sensors and related hardware over to 3.1 motor form 2.8. to make it easier just use the long block assembly of 3.1, with all 2.8 intake, sesors.....etc:naughty:

people swap the 3.4's into the older cavaliers all the time. those older cavaliers were 2.8's and 3.1s. www.jbody.org is a link to the cavalier "supramania.com" [ i know its not comparable :D ] but search around on there. GM swaps have been done forever and will be done. try that site and maybe link off of it.

Are they the same block? I think they are, but i know the bottom end assembly is different(crank, pistons)

yes they are. gm just put a different crank in a 2.8 and it became a 3.1. The only thing other than the sensors being different, is the fuel injectors being different omhs. I swapped one once....worked for me as is. 2.8 to 3.1 in a beretta...runs good.

If GM stroked the 2.8 to 3.1, then the shortblock is different, not just the crank. But they should be interchangable.
So your tellin me that when i put a 3.1 crank in a 2.8 and changed nothing, that the blocks different? I can drop a 3.1 crank in my 2.8 s10 and not change anything. Gm did this factory. 60* motor is a 60* motor......same as a sbc....a 283 is same block as a 400 block LOL!
So in gm motors
(2.8, 3.1, 3.4 same block)
(283, 302, 305, 309, 326, 327, 350, 383, 400 same block)
(396, 409, 427, 454, 507 same block)
get my drift?

It's not quite that easy. For one thing, if the 2.8 came out of a RWD vehical (S10) and the 3.1 came out of a FWD car, then the starter locations are on the opposite sides. Also, the flywheels are different diameters. I REALLY suggest you go over to the 60 Degree board and ask these questions.

Look look....im not saying the rwd and fwd blocks are the same....im saying that the 2.8 can be turned into a 3.1 by a crank swap. Ive done one of each...a 2.8 beretta to 3.1, and an s10 2.8 to 3.1. I plan on doing another one to my truck this summer. If it were me,,,id use 3.1 engine with 2.8 sensors, but the 3.1 injectors. Do some homework and you will be fine. OH BTW Syris, up in toldeo...they have 2.8 fwd motors like mad.....maybe if you just want oe stuff. Pm me if you want the junkyards number i use a lot.
