Fog light mod w/ auto off question (warning big picture)

Hi,
i've been wanting to do the fog light mod, but i dont know if the auto off feature of the car would still function (with the fog light). I know if i do the mod, i'll use the fogs all the time. I also realize i often forget to turn off the (rear) lights during dark days. So i'm just a bit concerned about flat batteries.

From what i can figure out, i dont think the current 'mod' style turns off the lights with opening of the door.

I don't follow why you'd worry about forgetting to turn off the tails because auto off already takes care of them. That said your mod will work but the fogs will only be usable with the tails on. On the other hand, since you're feeding the fog light relay from the gauge or cig fuse, the mod is redundant. The fogs will go off with the key

HIUH? lol.

I see my stupidity...i was mistaking the dome fuse that lights up the guage's bulbs with the guage fuse that powers the guage needles and incorrectly thinking the fog relay would continue to get power after turning ignition to off just like the backlight of the guage continues to be lit after turning car off.


and yeah, i might as well use what i learn in school for something personally interesting instead of some boring schoolwork.
and while we're on this topic, am i the only one that finds the way toyota did their fog light wiring strange as heck. Like your low beam has be turned on for fogs to work, kind of strange. if your low beam burns out, you lose your fog lights too. BONUS...lol.

You're welcome. I wasn't suggesting you were stupid. On the contrary I wish more here would make an effort to learn this stuff.

I don't see the stock wiring as being strange in one sense since driving with fogs only doesn't make much sense from a lighting standpoint and is illegal in most places. Now if we're talking about "coolness factor" that may be a different story. That said why people think anyone else is impressed by what kind of lighting they have is beyond me. I do agree it's sort of stupid how Toyota fed the relay. You'd have to lose both low beam filaments for the fogs not to work though.

I don't lose auto-off with my custom turbo timer because I designed it to be canceled by the tails. It flashes the ignition key ring red while operating and uses the headlight washer button because I didn't want to mount another switch somewhere. The design also provides for anti-theft and carjacking. They can take it but they won't get far. I can't remember that last time I used the timer function because modern oils make turbo timers a waste of well, time.
