I just rebuilt a new engine for my 89T. It's a stock block with 7MGE internals in it. Everything is stock except for a 1.4mm TMS MHG and ARP headstuds. I finally started it up for the first time today then 3 seconds later it dies. Upon startup the starter motor has a hard time working which is odd because it's 2 weeks old off of my 86.5 car. I got it running again but I had to always keep my foot on the hrottle otherwise it would die in a few seconds. I bumped up the idle a little bit so it would run on it's own but it sounds horrible. It backfires and has no low rpm power (it creeped up my driveway). Does this sould like a timing issue or worse?

Codes? Check timing. Any boost leaks? Vacuum leaks?

i'm assuming codes won't show up unless the check engine light is on? if so then no codes...i retightened all my intercooler piping and checked the torque on the intake etc...and it was all ok. As for vaccum leak i have the pcv system unhooked (i had to make an accordian hose and forgot the extra plug) it just vents into the air but i haven't blocked the throttle body port. I'm redoing the timing today.

Not necessarily...

I definitely agree with first things first: codes, then timing (if your timing seems ok after checking according to the tsrm, line your crank up to TDC, and make sure your cams aren't off a tooth)

Ok I redid my timing now it fires up easily. The check engine light then started coming on. How do I check for codes?
