I decided to adjust the e-brake cable last week at the lever since it never really worked, and immediately started getting severe intermittent clacking and squeeking from the passenger side. I drove the car little since then and ordered new shoes (for $101! :3d_frown: ) to go on today after returning from out of town. The driver's side disc came off no problem, but the passenger side won't budge. Here's what I've done so far...

1. shot a little PB Blaster through the e-brake adjustment hole in the disc
2. Completely backed the pressure off the cable by backing the adjustment nut almost off
3. Tapped all sides of the disc with a rubber mallet

The thing is jammed on there, and there's no doubt the shoes are in the actuated position, probably wedged in a groove in the drum part of the disc, which looks vintage to me. How in the farg am I going to get it off? Anybody else ever work through this one before?

look at the brake disc - there are two threaded holes to screw bolts into to force the disc off the hub....I can't remember the thread size, (M8x1.25 comes to mind) but the bolts that fit are used everywhere on the car.

awww funny how the old drum brakes gets everyone ;)

lol

inside of the parking brake drum, like all drum brakes, is an adjustment star that lets you adjust the braking action of the pads (Adaptly named shoe adjuster)

on the passenger side need to go up to close (if i recall). What this will do is bring the pads in to allow the brakes rotor to be removed without a hammer ;)

Done! Two 12mm bolts through those holes made my day! :)

No wonder I was getting so much noise back there. The friction pad on the rear shoe had completely fallen off and was swinging around in there. I'm sure it was wedged in somehow and making it hard to get the disc off, because even backing the star off completely didn't do much of anything to release it. Doesn't look like any damage was done, so after a year and a half I will finally be able to park on a hill. :bigthumb:

Thanks again for the quick help.

Not only was the rear friction pad just flying around on the passenger side, but the front wasn't there at all! It probably hadn't been there in years. On the drivers side, there was a little shoe left on both the front and back, but the back was starting to peel away, too. It's a good thing this job finally climbed higher on my list of things to get done.

Brewster, for a few minutes I thought I was heading the way of a puller, myself.

you paid too much for those shoes I'm thinking...

hate when the dealer tries their 250% markup...

he probably stripped the bolts... I've seen it happen on some rust belt cars

i paid ~80 for the set of shoes from Champion....unless vehicles with rear drums use comparable shoes, I doubt we could find the shoes any cheaper in the aftermarket
