I tried to time my 7mgte and when I plugged the jumper wire in to the correct holes on the diagnostic plug the engine did not advance but a tiny bit not like normal..could this be wiring or a ecu problem ..Barry

sorry i am new to the site, and cant find where to start my own thread so . . .

I have an 87 Supra with the 7MGTE. Just bought it off some guy who pulled the engine from a working supra. Said the engine ran when he took it out but now it only cranks. I've done all the tests in the TFRM but am stuck because i cant get the engine to give me any diagnostic codes. I am following the manual to the letter, but still no success. Any hints or ideas as to what i or the car is doing wrong.

Thanks

The check engine light doesn't flash when you put the jumper in?

Just clarifying ;)

You use the same pins to check for codes as you do for setting timing.

Timing:

Codes:
http://www.cygnusx1.net/supra/TechTips/engine_error_codes.aspx

Regardless whether or not you have codes or not, your Check Engine Light (CEL) should do SOMETHING when the car is running and those pins are jumped. If the CEL isn't flashing at all, you might not be making a good enough connection to jump the pins. If it is, then you should be safe to set timing.
