My turbo went kaput on me a few weeks ago.
The previous day I had the intake off checking on a coolant hose, and like I usually do I checked the turbo for shaft play. there was next to none.
It started out of the blue, driving almost at idle, as soon as the turbo would come off of vacuum, i heard a grinding noise up front. I stepped off the the gas immediately and it stopped. i repeated it a few times, trying to figure out what it sounded like, i thought about the turbo, but i did have oil pressure. after about 5 minutes of driving it started smoking out the back. took off the turbo, has lots of shaft play.
My question now is, is there a way to diagnose why the turbo failed? faulty turbo or faulty system? I don't want to replace a turbo just to have it fail again.
Thanks
Delmer.
