I am trying to set my cps sensor and the groove and the machined hole are not lining up when in the head. Gear has not been changed to the best of my knowledge. Is it possible for the gear to be installed 180 opposite? When installed the signal rotor is one tooth off in either direction cannot get it to line up. one tooth back and it barely runs, one tooth forward and has a miss at rpm. the only way to get it perfect is to turn the exhaust cam forward one full tooth. Please help.

I posted the following on supraforums for somebody who had problems with his cps.
Please make sure that your timing belt is on properly (both the cam gears should have the notch pointing up and in the middle as per tsrm)

Here's the easy way:

Take out the CPS.
Set engine at TDC. Don't go the hard route with the 112 counter clock and sh*t.
Just set you crank pully at 0.
Take out the Nr1 spark plug and stick a very long screwdriver in there and make sure it hits the cilinder.

If you now turn your crank over you can see the screwdriver move. If it moves down, you were at the right TDC and you need to go back a little. (get it back just before the 0 mark and then again forward a little to match your crank pulley at 0)

If the screwdriver goes up, keep turning until you're at the next tdc.

After that put everything back together and put in your cps.
The CPS goes UP!

this is the correct picture

Align the blue painted part on your CPS with the upper sensor. When you put the CPS in it should move a little so it's in the position as depicted above.

good luck.

Childersburg AL,
^^^^^ what i did was take off the timing cover so i could see my cam marks, put it on TDC. You line up the marks on the CPS, then it goes into the head and then the gear turns a notch, so the sensors arent going to be -- the'll be uneven like in the pic above.
even with out a timing light this should have your car in the general running area.
I took the cover off the cps so i could track the gear movement...
