Hi, I own a 1990 7mgte. I am trying to install the cps and I cant align the drilled mark with the groove while keeping the bolt centered. The only way I can align it is if the bolt is at the top of the adjustment oval. My crank pulley is at 0 and so are the cam gears. I also took out the #1 spark plug and watched a pipe rise up to ensure it is TDC at 0. When I do get the bolt hole near centered the cps is out of alignment which appears to be maybe one tooth on the gear, the car wont start. But if I align it the way I previously stated, the car starts but runs poorly. Tomarrow I will try to solve this problem and was hopeing to hear from everyone on what I may be doing wrong or some advise on what I can try. Thanks for your time.

The bolt that secures the CPS is not a good indicator. Align the CPS gear with the notch per the TSRM, but keep in mind the gear rotates when pushed into the head. It should look like this when fully seated:
In addition to the crank damper index pointing at zero, both cam gear index marks should be pointing at the notch in the cam gear back plate.

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. I see what your saying. I have been off the whole time according to what you have shown me.
Confirm the crank is pointing at "zero" (#1 piston at TDC) and both cam gear index marks are pointing at the rear cover notch. The CPS should be installed as shown with everything else lined up.
I installed the cps exactly how you have shown in the picture and my car hasn't started. Is there anything else I should be looking at? I don't have any codes. The only time I have had the car start and run but sounding as though it needed some fine tuning was when I had that cps turned so the bolt was at the top of the adjustment to obtain alignment of that little numb on the center inside the cps and the upper mark you have in red on the photo.

Fourth pic down shows the cam gears and matchmarks. There's 3 holes on each gear...did you install the gears with the pin in the center hole?
Check the spark plug wire order on the coil packs...from left to right the wires should be:
1-6-3-4-2-5
Recheck your CPS connector and spark plug wire connections on both ends.

I took the cps out to replace the o ring. I had oil leaks. I did the valve covers, new plugs and wires, replaced the trubo, intercooler pipes, i had to fix some coolant leaks. I checked the gap on the plugs they are all .030, ive made sure the plugs are pushed in all the way, the coil pack order is 1-6-3-4-2-5. The cam gears are aligned with the matchmarks on the metal back plate. I didnt do the timing belt it was done when i purchased the engine from jarco about 8 months ago. I check the wires on the cps I juggled them around a bit. Black smoke on start and while running rough?
Check all your IC piping connectors and all the hoses on the accordion hose. Check the electrical connector to the AFM...take it out and take a look at the contacts.
Pull the EFI fuse for a minute and reinstall to clear any codes before you try a restart.

No there isnt any black smoke on startup. Ive pulled the afm plug on and off a few times and also have pulled the efi fuse to clear codes. I wish I had asked this sooner because anytime these things happen its usually my own fault. But anyways, one more thing I did is the 3 plugs on the coil pack which come from the engine harness. They connect under the spark plugs on the coil pack, each has two wires going into each plug. My plastic plug head were cracked so i removed the wires from them one at a time and put them into a new plastic plug head from my other harness. I was very careful that i didnt mixed them up as I only did one plug at a time. But say I did screw up and on the same plug I had switched the wires around, could that cause this problem?
Yes it would. Looking at it from the top, the wire on the right...all 3 are the same color (mine is a light tan). The wire on the left for each are all different colors.
from left to right I had tan on the right for the first two but the 3rd plug they are close in color one is alittle lighter than the other but i totally blew it and put it on the right. I switched it and put the darkr one on the right and set the puley and cam gears at there marks the cps turned to the position you showed in the picture i started it and IT WORKED! Now i just have to get my timing gun and set the ignition timing to 10btdc if i rmeber right. Thank you so much for helping me rethink this and find my own stupid mistake.
Yep, 10 deg BTDC is correct.
