How often is the block affected by a BHG? I removed my engine after a BHG and I was told that it had been rebuilt around 60k miles ago. After taking some stuff apart I noticed how great of condition everything still was. But since the head gasket blew and ruined the head, is there any chance the block was hurt?

Did you drive it once you noticed it was hot. I really dont think there is a problem. It takes quite a bit to mess up a block. Although if you are going MHG then it is recommended that you get the block decked.
I always have the block "cleaned up" a little, especially if it had a BHG. The head definatly should be checked and milled just enough to straighten everything up, as little as possible.mkIII213 said:
As long as the motor wasn't overheated to much to long everything should be OK. It also depends on how much was taken off the last time. You have to have it checked.

I took the oil pan off and everything was really clean and in great shape. The catch net thing was still shiny as if it had just been replaced.cuel said:

The engine shop said that it looked like the head ran without oil at one point and it did some damage to the cam journals or bearing caps which were worn down from the metal on metal contact. And because of that, the head was trash.
Oh. lol, could be normal wear. In that case, you're probably good to go. If you have the pan off, just go ahead and check the bearings.
Little hint: with the motor in the car, check the mains one at a time. Pull one, check it, install it, and torque it back to specs before you remove the next one.

I would think if the tech said the head was run without oil for awhile, the bearings would be fried also. But like cuel said the cam journals maybe normal wear; you'll know when you check the mains. If they are scored then the rod bearings are toast too.
